At Calibrations Counseling & Consultation, you will be accepted for who you are and we will always advocate for you.

Paper Heart

A Space That's Actually Safe

At Calibrations Counseling & Consultation, we treat our LGBTQIA+ clients and their families with the dignity, respect, and affirmation that you deserve. We provide a space to support and celebrate who you are as a person, as well as validate your experiences and explore the difficulties that you face as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

We are committed to constant reflection of our own attitudes and beliefs, recognition and challenging of our biases, and acknowledgement of our areas of privilege. We are also vocal advocates for social change and justice for the LGBTQIA+ community.

We see you. You are valid. You matter.

What LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy Actually Means

There's a difference between a therapist who says they're affirming and one who actually is. Affirming therapy means your identity is never treated as a problem to be solved, a phase to be worked through, or something that needs to be explained or justified. It means your therapist already understands that being LGBTQIA+ is a normal, healthy part of human experience, and the work you do together starts from there.

At Calibrations, that's the baseline for every therapist on our team, not a specialty add-on. You shouldn't have to spend your session educating your therapist on what your identity means or defending the validity of your experience. That's not therapy. That's labor. We're here to take that off your plate.

We also recognize that affirming care looks different for different people. Coming out at 19 looks different from coming out at 45. Being a queer neurodivergent person navigating both identities at once is its own particular kind of complicated. Being trans in the current political climate carries a weight that can't be separated from your mental health. We hold all of that.

What We Can Help With

LGBTQIA+ clients come to us for a wide range of reasons. Some are navigating identity questions for the first time. Others are dealing with the relational fallout of living authentically. Some are managing anxiety or depression that's been compounded by years of minority stress, and some just want a therapist who gets it without needing a lengthy explanation first.

Things we commonly work on together include:

  • Identity exploration and self-understanding

  • Coming out, at any age and in any context

  • Family rejection and complicated relationships with family of origin

  • Navigating relationships, dating, and intimacy as an LGBTQIA+ person

  • Minority stress and the cumulative toll of living in a world not built for you

  • Gender dysphoria and gender-affirming care support

  • Medical letters of support for gender-affirming procedures

  • Intersecting identities, including being both LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent

  • Anxiety, depression, and trauma with an affirming lens

  • Life transitions including relationship changes, gender transition, and chosen family dynamics

If something is weighing on you and you've been hesitant to bring it to therapy because you weren't sure you'd be understood, this is the place.

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Care and Neurodivergence

Research consistently shows higher rates of ADHD, autism, and other neurodivergent profiles among LGBTQIA+ individuals. If you're navigating both, the intersection can feel like a lot to hold at once. Sensory experiences, communication differences, masking across multiple dimensions of identity, and the challenge of finding community that understands all of who you are, not just parts of you.

Our team has specific experience supporting clients at this intersection. You don't have to pick which part of yourself to bring to the room.

Frequently Asked Questions About LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy

What is LGBTQIA+-affirming therapy?

LGBTQIA+-affirming therapy is an approach that treats diverse sexual orientations and gender identities as normal and healthy, rather than as issues to be addressed or changed. An affirming therapist works from a place of full acceptance of your identity, which means sessions focus on your actual mental health and goals rather than on your identity itself.

How is affirming therapy different from regular therapy?

In a non-affirming setting, LGBTQIA+ clients often spend time and energy explaining their identities, correcting misconceptions, or managing a therapist's discomfort. Affirming therapy eliminates that dynamic. Your therapist already has a foundation of knowledge and acceptance, so you can use your session time for the things you actually came to work on.

Do I have to be out to start therapy?

No. Wherever you are in your process is a valid place to start. Some clients come to therapy specifically because they're trying to understand or articulate something about their identity. Others are fully out in some parts of their life and not others. We meet you where you are, without pressure to be anywhere else.

Do you work with families and partners of LGBTQIA+ individuals?

Individual therapy at Calibrations focuses on the LGBTQIA+ person themselves rather than family or couples sessions. That said, if you have a family member or partner who is looking for their own support, we're happy to provide referrals to affirming providers in Ohio who work with that dynamic.

Is therapy at Calibrations confidential?

Yes. Standard confidentiality applies to all sessions. What you share in therapy stays between you and your therapist, with the same legal exceptions that apply to all licensed therapists in Ohio.

Do you offer therapy for transgender and nonbinary clients specifically?

Yes. Our team has experience working with transgender and nonbinary clients across a range of concerns, including gender dysphoria, gender-affirming care navigation, social and medical transition support, and the mental health impacts of living as a trans or nonbinary person in the current climate. We also write medical letters of support for clients pursuing gender-affirming medical care.

Where are you located and do you offer in-person sessions?

We are based in Barberton, Ohio and offer telehealth therapy to clients throughout the state. We also have limited in-person availability at our Barberton office. Most sessions are conducted virtually.
